Introducing the Artwork for the 2018 Draft Horse Classic Poster

Introducing the artwork for the 2018 Draft Horse Classic poster. This beautiful painting is titled “The Wash Rack” and is done by artist Yvonne Bonacci.  Yvonne painted this from a photo she took at last year’s Draft Horse Classic and it has already received numerous awards, including first place and People’s Choice at the National Art of the Horse Show, Best of Show and Artist Choice at Art at the Classic, and was a finalist at two international shows. Yvonne is thrilled (“a dream come true”) to be chosen as this year’s artist, and we thank Yvonne for sharing her talent with us!  The 2018 Draft Horse Classic is September 20 – 23.

Majestic draft horse performances, breathtaking competitions, and seeing a Draft Horse “up close” are all part of the festivities at the 31st Annual Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair, September 21 – 24, at the beautiful Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. Featuring six different performances by the Draft Horses, this event has become the premier Draft Horse show in the western United States. The Classic spotlights a variety of horses, teams, and performances; featuring everything from farm wagons, carriages, and driving competitions to dancing horses and racing mules.  The stars of the show are the horses, and with more than 120 horses stabled on the grounds, the Classic offers a unique chance to observe them in a multitude of settings.

In between the performance classes, enjoy showcase specialty acts the CalCrush Clydesdales, California Cowgirls, chariot and chuck wagon races, an acrobatic equestrian production that incorporates aerialists and Roman riding, the Bobby Kerr Mustang Act, and the CHP Mounted Patrol Unit.

Meet the Judge of the Draft Horse Classic: Glenn Lewis

Glenn Lewis from Springfield, Missouri, has been selected as the judge of this year’s Draft Horse Classic, September 21 – 24, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley, California.  Lewis has been judging horse shows across North America for more than 23 years, and this is his first time judging the Draft Horse Classic.

“I’m very excited to be part of the Draft Horse Classic, and I’m honored to be able to serve as the judge,” said Lewis. “I really enjoy traveling and judging because it gives me the opportunity to meet new exhibitors. It also gives me the opportunity to visit farms in the area and see their horses.”

Lewis is the fourth generation in his family to breed and show Clydesdales. For the past 15 years, he has worked at Soaring Eagle Farms – a breeding farm and a farm used to prepare horses for sales and the show ring – owned by Dr. Jeff Gower.  For the first eight of those 15 years, Glenn kept the horses at his farm in Sunderland, Ontario, Canada. In 2010, he and his family relocated to Springfield, Missouri to manage Soaring Eagle Farms full time.  As a family, they work on the farm to take care of the more than 80 Clydesdales and Shires.

Lewis and his wife, Shelley, have been married 25 years and have two daughters, Danielle and Jessica.  Danielle was the Canadian Clydesdale Queen in 2011 and Jessica was the National Clydesdale Queen in 2016.

At this year’s Classic, September 21 – 24, Lewis will be busy judging all six Draft Horse Classic performances that take place throughout the four-day event.  In addition to the draft horse performances, musical entertainment, an art show, delicious food, a Western Trade Show, a horseshoeing competition, community exhibits, and barn tours are all part of the activities at the Fairgrounds.

Tickets to the performances are on sale now, as well as the day of the event, and may be purchased by calling the Fair office at (530) 273-6217, or visiting here.
