Registration Open for Market Goats, Lambs, Swine and Turkeys
Registration for market goats, lambs, swine and turkeys at the Nevada County Fair opened today. The deadline to turn in paperwork is June 9 at 4 pm. All the details can be found here.

Registration Dates for Market Animals for 2017 Fair
The Nevada County Fair’s mandatory registration deadline for all market beef is 4:00 pm, Friday, April 7th. The mandatory registration deadline of all other large market animals including Turkeys is 4:00 pm, Friday, June 9th.
Junior beef exhibitors may register their market animals at the Fairground’s Administration Office, Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, beginning March 20th. The absolute deadline for market beef registration is 4:00 pm, Friday, April 7th. Goat, lamb, hog and turkey exhibitors may register their market animals beginning May 22nd. The absolute deadline for market goat, sheep, swine and turkey registration is 4:00 pm, Friday, June 9th.
All FFA, 4-H, Grange and Independent exhibitors are required to register their market animals for the Fair on the dates specified above by completing an entry form and paying the entry fees. Entry forms and detailed instructions are available at the 4-H Office, through FFA Advisors, the Fair Administration Office, and here.
To exhibit a large market animal at the 2017 Nevada County Fair, exhibitors must be 9 years old or in the 4th grade by January 1, 2017 and must be a Nevada County Junior. A Nevada County Junior exhibitor is defined as:
- An exhibitor whose legal residence is within the boundaries of the Nevada County Fair and who attends a school within Nevada County, or
- An exhibitor who lives outside Nevada County, attends a school in Nevada County and is a member of the FFA, Nevada County 4-H or Nevada County Grange, or
- An exhibitor who is a Nevada County resident enrolled and attending college and is a member of the FFA, Nevada County 4-H or Nevada County Grange.
Although an exhibitor may enter only one large market animal in the Fair, each exhibitor will be allowed to register a maximum of 2 animals per species, not to exceed 4 animals in total. The Fair appreciates that exhibitors often choose to raise more than one market animal, giving them the option of bringing their finest quality animal to the Fair to sell through the Junior Livestock Auction, which is scheduled during the Fair on Sunday, August 13th. A family may choose to register a second animal of the same species to be shared by their children in the event that one of their children needs to bring a back-up animal.

Youth in Agriculture Working Hard for this Year’s Fair
While the Fair is still months away, Nevada County’s youth in agriculture work tirelessly all year in order to show animals at the Fair. Here’s to all the hard working students out there preparing for this year’s Fair. We love to see the barns full of livestock!
Fairgrounds Foundation Speaker Series Features Stephanie Ortiz
“When finding a career path, be open to having a meandering path, but don’t blindly wander,” said Stephanie Ortiz, Executive Dean of the Nevada County’s Sierra College Campus, to a group of local high school students on Wednesday night. “Finding a career path is not always a straight line; it’s more of a meandering path with mistakes and learning opportunities along the way, and a path that allows you to look back with perspective.”
Ortiz addressed 20 students from Bear River and Nevada Union high schools as the guest speaker in the second season of the Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation’s Speaker Series. The series brings business education – through access to business leaders and real-life leadership experiences and advice – to local high school students.
Ortiz has been in education for more than 30 years at the community college and university levels. She has served as the Executive Dean of Sierra College’s Nevada County Campus since 2009. Prior to that, she was the Dean of the Business and Technology Instructional Division. She’s also taught in business at Sierra College, Mt. San Antonio Community College and California State University, Fresno. Before beginning her career in education, she worked in human resources management for The Fresno Bee newspaper and General Dynamics, Pomona Division.
Ortiz discussed the opportunities available at Sierra College, the benefits of attending a community college, and the importance of exploring careers. She also shared the “soft” skills – adaptability, analysis and solution mindset, collaboration, communication, digital fluency, entrepreneurial thinking, empathy, resilience, self-awareness, and social diversity awareness – necessary for today’s work force.
The second season of the Speaker Series features six speakers, one each month, and will run through April. Upcoming speakers include Anita Oberbauer, Professor and Chair of the Department of Animal Science, University of California Davis; and Caroline Beteta, CEO of Visit California.

Livestock Meeting to Review 2016 Fair and Plan for 2017 Fair
Nevada County Fair officials have scheduled a livestock meeting on Thursday, September 8th to review the 2016 Fair’s livestock program and plan for the 2017 Fair.
Future Farmers of America advisors, 4-H leaders, Grange leaders, exhibitors and others interested in the Nevada County Fair livestock programs are invited to participate. The meeting will be held in the Fair’s Board Room and will begin at 4 p.m. While no specific timing is assigned to each species, the critique order is small animals, goats, beef, sheep and swine.
“Our livestock programs are critical elements of the Nevada County Fair and it’s important each year that we review what worked and what can be improved to maximize the exhibitors’ potential and provide the public with a positive experience,” explains Fair Deputy Manager, Robin Hauck.
