Treat Street Drive Through Event Postponed

We know you all love Treat Street, and while we have been busy behind-the-scenes planning a Treat Street Drive Through event, we have decided to postpone the event at this time. The reasons are many – recent public health directives, health and financial concerns from the Treat Street vendors, and increased food costs all resulted in making the event not feasible at this time. However, we will keep the plan in place in hopes that we can offer this at a future date – when it is safe to do so and the Treat Street organizations are more comfortable moving forward.

Throughout this planning process, we made it very clear to the Treat Street organizations that this was voluntary and needed to make sense for them. We acknowledge and respect that the time simply isn’t right and applaud the Treat Street organizations for prioritizing the health concerns of their dedicated volunteers.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone who was planning to attend to support one of the many local restaurants that are offering outdoor dining and to-go service and make a direct donation to one of the Treat Street nonprofit organizations.  Thank you to our community – near and far – for your continued support and love of all things Fairgrounds!

We Are Your Nevada County Fair. We Are Your Nevada County Fairgrounds

Despite the cancellation of the 2020 Nevada County Fair, we are still here. We are your Nevada County Fairgrounds. We are your Nevada County Fair.

Established in 1884, the Nevada County Fair is one of the county’s oldest community institutions. Adaptability and innovation are part of our history. During WWII, the Fair was canceled for several years, the Draft Horse Classic was displaced during the 49er Fire, and now the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic will be part of our story. We will prove, as we have time and again, that as a Fairgrounds and as a community we are stronger together.

We know the cancellation of the Fair will have a huge impact on the community, including all the hardworking agricultural youth exhibitors, local nonprofit organizations represented on Treat Street, and the Fairgrounds itself.

There are many questions right now, but the one we hear the most often is, “Can I help?” The answer is a resounding “Yes!” Here’s how:

  • Visit here to bid and buy online at the official Nevada County Fair Junior Livestock and Ag Mechanics Auction August 13 – 15.
  • Eat treats and support local nonprofits in August at the Drive-Through Treat Street events. Visit here to learn more.
  • Visit here to donate, advocate, or join the Fairgrounds Foundation in support of the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

All the details can be found here

Meet Youth Livestock Exhibitor Delia

Meet youth livestock exhibitor Delia!  Pictured here with her market lamb Bruno, Delia is 11 years old, a member of the Chicago Park Hornets 4H Club and this is her second year raising animals for Fair. As she says, “I’m sad Fair is canceled,  but I will keep working hard because that’s what I would be doing anyway!” Like Delia, we’re busy working behind-the-scenes – in partnership with the Nevada County Livestock Producers and with financial and organizational support from the Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation, Bear River FFA Boosters, Nevada County Ag Youth Boosters, Nevada Union FFA Boosters, and the Nevada County Farm Bureau – to offer an online show and auction that showcases and honors all the hard work of our junior livestock and ag mechanics exhibitors. We’ll be posting more information on how you can support Delia and other youth exhibitors at the auction that will take place in August.

Nevada County Fair Board Postpones 2020 Fair Decision

Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 26, 2020

NEVADA COUNTY FAIR BOARD POSTPONES 2020 FAIR DECISION

At the Nevada County Fairgrounds Board of Directors meeting Tuesday evening, the decision regarding the status of the 2020 Nevada County Fair was postponed.

The decision comes in light of Governor Newsom’s announcement on Tuesday afternoon that California is moving rapidly into Stage 3 of the reopening plan.

The delay will allow Fairgrounds staff and the Board to conduct fact finding, communicate with State and local public health officials and review any updated guidance regarding mass gatherings.

“We recognize that the Nevada County Fair is a treasured local event and that the cancellation would have an enormous impact on the community,” said Jeanette Royal, Board President of California’s 17th District Agricultural Association.  “Given that, and in light of the Governor’s announcement this afternoon, we need to make a decision based on the most current information available.”

The 2020 Nevada County Fair decision will be considered at the next Fairgrounds Board of Directors meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, 2020.

Fairgrounds Board Cancels Poultry Show at 2020 Nevada County Fair

Due to the continued presence of Virulent Newcastle Disease in California, the Nevada County Fairgrounds Board of Directors voted unanimously Tuesday night to cancel live poultry exhibits and the poultry and market egg show at the 2020 Nevada County Fair.

The decision was made after Dr. Annette Jones, California State Veterinarian with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), recommended cancelling poultry shows and poultry exhibits in California out of an abundance of caution until the regional quarantine in Southern California is lifted. The recommendation comes after a recent flareup of disease in the Southern California regional quarantine area, and the risk it poses to Fairs and poultry shows throughout the state.

Virulent Newcastle Disease is a highly contagious respiratory disease of birds, including chickens, that spreads quickly and is almost always deadly to poultry. Virus particles can spread by direct contact between birds, and people can spread the disease by moving infected birds, moving equipment and feed, and by wearing clothing and shoes that have been in infected areas. The only way to stop the spread of the virus and eradicate the disease is to euthanize infected birds, and all birds within highly infected areas.

The Nevada County Fair joins numerous other fairs and poultry organizations in California to cancel shows following the recommendation from the State Veterinarian.

“This decision was not made lightly, and we are all disappointed to have another Fair without live poultry exhibits,” said Patrick Eidman, CEO of the Nevada County Fairgrounds. “We can only hope that with most other Fairs following the same recommendation and CDFA’s proactive work in Southern California, that the restrictions will be lifted in time to have poultry return to the 2021 Nevada County Fair.”

To ensure that youth exhibitors in the poultry barn have opportunities to participate in the Fair, there will be various classes within the Youth Poultry Department, including a poultry poster contest and educational poultry booth displays.

Other livestock events and exhibits are expected to proceed as usual at the Nevada County Fair, August 12 – 16. For information about the Fair, visit NevadaCountyFair.com.
