Welcome to the Fairgrounds Foundation Newsletter
“Sea You at the Fair!” is the theme for the 2017 Nevada County Fair, August 9 – 13. If you’re interested in being an entertainer, vendor, exhibitor or community showcase act, now is the time to apply.
The Fairgrounds Foundation had a busy 2016. While the Cioppino Feed and Foundation Station are the major fundraising sources, in 2016 the Foundation also served beer and wine at Movies Under the Pines at the Fairgrounds and operated the arena food booth during the Draft Horse Classic. Also in 2016, the Foundation made contributions to the Fairgrounds for the purchase of a new ATM for the Fair, and for the required removal of a large grove of pine trees on the grounds due to a major bark beetle infestation. The Foundation also paid off the loan on the Foundation Station.
Below you’ll find details about our 2017 season, and the many volunteer opportunities available.
Sold Out Event
The 7th Annual Cioppino & Pasta Feed was a success and lots of fun! Those at the sold-out event enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the Foothill Lions Club and Chef Arnie Romanello, followed by a dessert auction of homemade goodies. There were also raffle prizes, and a live auction. We’re already planning for next year’s Cioppino & Pasta Feed on March 3, 2018. For information, as well as photos and a list of those who made the event a success, visit here.
As part of its fundraising efforts, the Nevada County Fairgrounds Foundation serves beer and wine from its Foundation Station at various events throughout the year. This year, we need volunteers for the following events:
- Strawberry Music Festival: May 25 – 28
- Movie Under the Pines: June 2, July 7 and July 22.
- Nevada County Fair: August 9 – 13
- Country Christmas Faire: November 24 – 26
If you’re interested in volunteering at any of these events, email Larry McDonald at ten.t1495535801sacmo1495535801c@eef1495535801fokcm1495535801 and we’ll add you to the email list of those who will receive volunteer requests as events near. Shifts are usually four hours, you’ll receive a free admission ticket for the day you volunteer, and you’ll have fun!
Your Membership Matters!
Your membership is critical to the success of the Fairgrounds Foundation and the Nevada County Fairgrounds. For decades California’s fairs were financially supported by a state allocation through the Fairs & Expositions fund. In recent years, as California weathered its financial crisis, the allocations were eliminated and state fees were imposed on the fairs. The negative financial impact to the Nevada County Fair was approximately $250,000. Now, the Nevada County Fairgrounds is dependent upon the fundraising efforts of the Foundation to provide financial stability in the event of an unanticipated challenge and for capital improvements. Plus, your membership is helping to protect and enhance a great community asset!
If you haven’t already, please consider joining or renewing your Foundation membership. A membership application is available here . There are many benefits to being a Foundation member.Do you have a friend, relative or neighbor who loves the Fair? Please encourage them to join the Foundation. We appreciate your support.
Series for Youth Wraps Up Its Second Season
Caroline Beteta – President and CEO of Visit California, and the State of California’s Director of Tourism – served as the final guest speaker in the second season of the Fairgrounds Foundation’s Speaker Series last week. The series brings business education – through access to business leaders and leadership experiences – to local high school students.
Caroline shared with students a typical “day in the life” as the CEO of Visit California, words of advice for those preparing to graduate, and answered questions from the students.
Caroline and her husband, Art Whitney, are avid supporters of the Nevada County Fairgrounds and have children who were livestock exhibitors. Art served two terms as a Fairgrounds Director and was inducted into the Fair’s Hall of Fame in 2013. Their generosity is evidenced by the naming of the livestock barn – Whitney Pavilion.
The Speaker Series fulfills the mission of fostering projects that develop our local youth in agriculture. This year, a $1,500 scholarship and a $1,000 scholarship will be available to two students participating in the Speaker Series.
